PITTSBURGH – Pinnacle Fighting Championships today announced the headliners for its next event, set to take place on July 12 in Pittsburgh, PA. PinnacleFC 8 will be headlined by a bout featuring the Steel City’s own Mark “The Pride of Bloomfield” Cherico taking on fellow rising star Luis Guerra for the organization’s first-ever professional featherweight title. In the co-main event, heavyweight Adam “The Prototype” Milstead will make his return after an 18-month hiatus to take on Nick Smiley.
Mark Cherico (6-0 / fighting out of Pittsburgh, PA) will headline a PinnacleFC event for the fifth time, as he looks to continue his unbeaten streak of 15 fights when he welcomes Luis Guerra (4-1 / fighting out of Indianapolis, IN) to Pittsburgh for the first time. Cherico will return to the cage on the heels of an impressive three-round decision over veteran Brady Hovermale at Pinnacle FC 6 in March. The bout was the first time in his career that Cherico made it to the judges. His professional career has seen him rack up four first round submissions, as well as a second round TKO victory over UFC veteran Donny Walker in June 2013.
Goldsby comes in with four wins in his five outings, including a first round TKO victory over Matt Montalvo in May 2014. The five-time Colosseum Combat veteran also boasts a victory over Terry House Jr., and three of his four victories as a pro have come via stoppage. Overall, Guerra is 8-2 in his career dating back to his amateur debut in 2010. Earlier this year, Guerra lost six family members in a tragic fire in his hometown of Indianapolis. He represents the MMA Fit Club and the rising Indiana MMA scene.
After a year and a half hiatus from mixed martial arts, Adam Milstead (4-1 / fighting out of Pittsburgh, PA) will return to the cage looking for his fifth consecutive victory. After a 10-2 amateur career as a light heavyweight, Milstead dropped his professional debut to Dane Bonnigson in 2011 before deciding to move up to the heavyweight division. Since then he is undefeated, with a pair of TKO victories coupled with two submission wins. Milstead competed on the inaugural PinnacleFC card in 2012, earning a first round TKO over Bobby Gurley.
Milstead will face Georgian Nick Smiley (6-3 / fighting out of Savannah, GA) in a bout that could send the winner onto the national stage at heavyweight. The 30-year-old Smiley was recently featured on MMAjunkie’s Fight Path series, where he detailed his difficult past that shaped his entrance into mixed martial arts. The 6’5”, 265-pound fighter has finished all six of his professional victories, including four knockout wins. Representing Rory and Adam Singer’s HardCore Gym, Smiley joins Milstead as one of the best heavyweight prospects in MMA.
In a highly anticipated grudge match, lightweights Jason “The Whip” Willett (4-4 / fighting out of Pittsburgh, PA) will take on Charlie “Mad Man” Gathers (4-5 / fighting out of Portage, PA). The night’s professional action will be kicked off by a featherweight bout featuring the professional debut of Evolve MMA team captain Bhrandon Poindexter (0-0 / fighting out of Akron, OH) against new Fight Club Pittsburgh product Steve Jones (0-1 / fighting out of Pittsburgh, PA).
Two titles will be on the line in amateur action, including featherweight and welterweight gold. Rising stars Jake Schilling (5-1 / fighting out of Pittsburgh, PA) and Ethan Goss (6-3 / fighting out of State College, PA) will do battle for the vacant featherweight title, while PinnacleFC middleweight champion Jim Rendeiro (4-1 / fighting out of Philadelphia, PA) will drop a weight class to challenge Matt Hester (3-1 / fighting out of Pittsburgh, PA) for the inaugural PinnacleFC welterweight title.
PinnacleFC 8 takes place at the Greentree Sportsplex in Pittsburgh, PA and will feature a well-rounded lineup of professional and amateur bouts.
